YOUR SPRING GUIDE TO GREENER GRASS

April through early May is the best time to build a healthy, lush lawn. From mowing, to early-season weed and feed treatments, we’ll offer tried-and-true tips so grass will be greener on your side.

WATERING: Give your lawn a deep soak, especially in areas along sidewalks that may have been salted or sanded over the winter. 

MOWING: When temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees, and frost is no longer in the ground, you can lightly rake your lawn and mow it. We recommend setting the mowing blade to 3″ or 4″. Your first lawn mowing should be set higher to help your lawn establish a deeper root system. 

CRABGRASS PREVENTER: A few days after your first mowing, apply crabgrass preventer – a pre-emergent product that can ONLY be applied in the Spring. The best time to apply is when soil temperatures are between 40 and 55 degrees. Do not apply after the soil temp has reached above 55. MAXLawn’s Crabgrass Preventer with Lawn Food is a granular, pre-emergent product that is safe and easy to use on existing lawns. It destroys crabgrass before it starts and will control crabgrass that has germinated (when seedlings first become visible) within the past 4 weeks. 

*Do not use Crabgrass Preventer in conjunction with new seeding, sodding, or over-seeding. Wait 10 to 12 weeks after crabgrass preventer application to apply grass seed or sod. 

WEED & FEED: If crabgrass is not an issue in your lawn, check out MAXLawn’s Weed and Feed. This product nourishes your lawn while controlling a variety of broadleaf weeds. Apply in the Spring before weeds emerge from the soil, or when they are small. Wait at least 30 days to seed or sod on applied sites.

REPAIR BARE SPOTS & OVERSEED: Spring is a great time to overseed your lawn to repair damaged grass and fill in bare spots. We offer exceptional grass seed varieties for full-sun, sun/shade, or dense shade lawns. For smaller areas, use quick and easy Rapid Repair Pods to treat dog spots, weed patches, or mole mounds. 

ENRICH YOUR SOIL: Top-dress your lawn with Coast of Maine’s Organic and Natural Black Earth Lawn Soil to boost nutrients in your soil and aid your lawn in moisture-retention.

We’re preparing for the 2025 Cemetery Urn Services!

Thank you for entrusting us with your loved one’s graveside display!

Pricing for the 2025 season is $79.95 and includes: Spring planting of your existing palm pot, urn delivery, and urn pick up in the Fall. For each additional planter going to the same cemetery, the fee is $49.95.

For $54.95, we will plant your cemetery urn, you would pick it up, and you would deliver it to your loved one’s cemetery site.

If you are renewing your urn services, we will send invoices for the 2025 Cemetery Urn Services on Friday, March 15th.

GET READY FOR FALL!

It’s time to think about Autumn garden activities! Here are a few tips to keep your gardens thriving.

TREE CARE: Give your trees long-term protection from deer rub, small animal damage, and sun scald with tree guards. September is the best time to apply plastic tree guards or breathable tree wrap to keep your trees safe this fall and winter. Remove tree protections in May, to allow the tree to breathe and give the trunk room to grow.

FRUIT TREE SALE: 20% OFF our huge selection of hardy and healthy apple, plum, pear, and cherry trees!

MULCH: Fall is a great time to add a 2″ to 3″ layer of mulch around your trees and landscape beds. Mulch insulates plant roots, protecting them from deep winter freezing. It also acts as a weed deterrent and aids in water retention.

WATERING: Trees and plants lose water during the winter from wind, sun scalding, and lack of moisture. Before the ground freezes, give your greens a thorough soak. Apply enough water so the ground is moist but not soggy.

ANIMAL CONTROL: Apply an animal repellent now to protect your fall bloomers and bulbs from deer, squirrels, and chipmunks. Protect trees and shrubs over winter with a liquid spray applied before freezing temperatures. Our animal repellents are available as a hose attachment for broadcast applications, in a hand spray bottle, and granular. We offer natural, pet-friendly products!
