Storm Water Management/Mitigation

Rain Gardens and Bioswales

Rain gardens and bioswales are depressions in the ground that are intended to capture and percolate storm water run-off. These depressions are planted with native flowers and grasses that thrive in wet conditions. The extensive root structure of these natives may penetrate the ground up to five feet below the surface, compared to turf grass which has a root depth of less than two inches. These deep rooted plants help to filter pollutants such as fertilizers and heavy metals before they can reach waterways and storm drains. Considerations like soil type, sunlight, and amount of water to be filtered are important factors that must be addressed in the design process. These practices may be eligible for cost sharing grants to help offset expenses.

Rain Water Infiltration

Underground infiltration systems work much like a drain field does on a conventional septic system. The goal is to percolate rainwater into the ground and recharge the water tables while reducing overland run-off. These systems have the capacity to infiltrate thousands of gallons of run-off while remaining completely invisible from site and virtually maintenance free. We have been implementing these systems for over 10 years and we have pioneered many new techniques and products to maximize overall efficiency. These systems are custom designed for each specific site and may be eligible for cost sharing grants to help offset expenses.
