Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As 2022 comes to a close, we wanted to thank you all for a wonderful season! Here are a few of our favorite highlights:

We were finally able to host our Open House / Customer Appreciation Day again, and it turned out to be our most successful event to date! We enjoyed gathering with old and new customers, friends, family, and our dedicated crew, while celebrating with live music and good food! We look forward to sharing another fun day with you in 2023.

The new Foam Daddy Machine added a whole new level of entertainment for kids of all ages! It was a huge hit at KJ’s New North for the Balsam Lake Labor Day festivities, and a fun addition at many birthday parties. If you’re looking for a new thing for a graduation party, birthday party, or a family celebration in 2023, call us at 715-485-3131 to rent the Foam Daddy!

We created a new Christmas Tree display and sales area next to our waterfall truck! The new site must be much more visible and accessible, because every tree sold!

Our garden center staff member, Summer, received her Professional Garden Center Certification through the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association. This is a rigorous, higher learning course similar to a Master Gardening program for professionals in the industry.

Summer and long-standing staff member, LuAnn, went to the Garden Center and Retail buying show this fall and are excited for all of the new products to come in the Spring of 2023!

We are so fortunate to have a core group of dedicated, hardworking crew members and loyal customers who have become friends and feel like family!

Thank you all for another wonderful 2022! We look forward to seeing you in 2023! From all of us at Balsam Lake Pro-Lawn, we wish you all a safe, healthy, and a very Happy New Year!

August Lawn and Landscape Updates

It’s The Best Time To Overseed, Plant, & Mulch!

August is like a breath of fresh air. The much-needed rain, cooler nights, and warm days are replenishing and rejuvenating for gardens, lawns, and landscapes. We’ve still got time to grow, plan, and prepare!

LAWN CARE: If areas of your lawn struggled in the summer heat and drought, now through mid-September is the time to invigorate your lawn with overseeding, aerating, and dethatching.

To enhance and enrich your lawn, visit our retail center for quality grass seed and seasonal lawn fertilizer. Call us at 715-485-3131 to schedule professional services for lawn aeration and dethatching. Visit our website for more details at balsamlakeprolawn.com.

LANDSCAPING: Maybe you’ve worked hard all summer planting, weeding, deadheading, and mulching. But if you’re like most Midwest gardeners, your flower beds got away from you.

With August’s cooler temperatures and rainier weather, now is the best time to pull those weeds, fill in places in the garden that need a little color, and add mulch to those landscape beds.

Mulch not only freshens up your landscaping, it also aids in soil moisture retention, suppresses weeds, and adds winter protection for new and existing trees, shrubs, and perennials. Come in and see our selection of bagged and bulk mulch!

GARDEN CENTER NEWS: Our garden center is flourishing with healthy and hardy plants. Come in for fall apple and maple trees, spring crabapple trees, colorful shrubs, late-blooming perennials, and graceful ornamental grasses.

Reduce plant shock and injury by planting now when the temperatures are a bit cooler and the weather is rainier. Planting now will also help your trees, shrubs, and perennials get established this season, allowing them to flourish next season.

FALL ANNUALS: We have a new shipment of fall-blooming annuals coming in next week – August 25th. Expect to see fall mums, celosia, fall hanging baskets, and fun late-blooming ornamentals.

FALL PLANTING CLASS: Are your seasonal planters looking a little tired? Join us for our fall planting class to brighten up your patio pots and make your home warm and welcoming.

Friday, Sept. 2 from 3pm to 5pm
Saturday, Sept. 3 from 1pm to 3pm

Class registration fee is $40 and includes a patio pot, fall annuals, soil, and planting support. Drop in anytime during the scheduled class time to create your fall seasonal planter.

Please Call us at 715-485-3131 to Pre-Register!

Thank you for making us a part of your late-summer lawn, garden, and landscaping projects! We look forward to seeing you soon!

From all of us at Balsam Lake Pro-Lawn, Happy August!

Now, onto your lawn. As your lawn is uncovered, you may notice winter damage from salt used on driveways and walkways. To restore the health of your soil and grass: flush the area to give your lawn a deep watering once the weather warms. If brown spots persist, apply Gypsum and consider adding grass seed to those areas.

Late-April to Early-May is THE ONLY TIME to apply pre-emergent Crabgrass Preventer to your lawn!

Improving an existing lawn: If you’re looking to thicken your lawn, or will be over-seeding an area, here is a season-long program to enhance and enrich your lawn (pounds mentioned covers 1000 sq. ft.):

  • Late-April – apply 12lbs of Gypsum and 8 Lbs of 15-15-5
  • End of May – apply 5lbs of 15-15-5
  • Mid-July – apply 3lbs of 15-15-5
  • Mid-to-late September – apply 4lbs Winterizer

Growing and maintaining healthy lawns and landscapes is vital for our environment by filtering storm water run-off and improving water quality, reducing air temperatures, and providing essential habitat for wildlife.

We also provide professional fertilization and lawn care services! Call us at 715-485-3131 or visit our website at balsamlakeprolawn.com to sign up for a fertilization and/or lawn care program that’s right for you!

From all of us at Balsam Lake Pro-Lawn, we look forward to seeing you soon and wish you a WARM and Happy Spring!

If you have already removed your snow stakes, please bundle them up and return them to our retail center located at 916 Badger Drive, Balsam Lake, WI, 54810. We will store them for you and set them out at the start of the following snowplow season.

Safety Notice: Wear gloves when handling snow stakes! They are made of fiberglass and may cause skin irritation.

Thank you for your business this season! From all of us at Balsam Lake Pro-Lawn, we wish you a happy and warm Spring!

On a garden and landscape note: Spring brings hope, sunshine, and warmer weather, but it can also bring slush, snow, muck, and mud!

 BE PATIENT!

To quickly answer your most pressing driveway and landscape questions: Much of our bulk landscape material is still frozen. Our loading and hauling equipment is still prepared for snow plowing, just in case. Polk County has Spring road restrictions, strictly limiting our trucks and hauling capacity. By mid-to-late April, our bulk products and roads become more accessible.

Here are some very important Spring garden care tips!

  • Keep the roots and the tender new growth of your plants protected with leaves and mulch until daytime temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Also, our pollinators like butterflies, bees, and benefitial insects are still hibernating, or just emerging from the protective landscapes in your gardens during this time. Distrubing your gardens during this time can be disruptive to your plants and pollinators.
  • Once the snow melts, it’s time apply garden-safe pest repellents! Protect your spring bulbs and early-bloomers in your gardens from rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and deer with safe and effective products like Plantskyyd. We have a variety of sprays, granulars, and powders to keep newly emerging spring bloomers for those pesky creatures who love to eat our favorite plants! Stop in and see our selection, and talk to our friendly staff about products they recommend.
  • Spring is the best time to apply garden fertilizers! When your gardens begin to unthaw, you can work the soil, and your plants begin to spring up, apply gentle garden fertilizers like Schultz Flower and Vegetable Plant Food or Schultz Bloom Food for flowering trees, shrubs, and perennials.

We’re here for you for all of your floral, lawn, landscape and garden care! Please stop in and see us, give us a call at 715-485-3131, or visit our website at balsamlakeprolawn.com.

From all of us at Balsam Lake Pro-Lawn, we wish you a bright and blooming Spring! Looking forward to seeing you soon!
